We are proud to share that Welcome 2 Reality was recently featured in CT Insider for our seminar series, Misconceptions of the Angry Black Woman. This important training is part of our mission to provide education and advocacy that challenges harmful stereotypes while creating space for truth, healing, and dialogue.
As our Director of Curricula and Development, Anthony Gay, explained in the article:
“Since the times of slavery, a stereotype of the ‘angry Black woman’ — bossy, sassy, impudent, loud and uppity — has been a label current-day Black women have dealt with their entire lives.”
About the Seminar
The Misconceptions of the Angry Black Woman seminar is a four-part series designed to break down the origins, history, and ongoing impact of this stereotype. The program highlights how harmful media portrayals—from early films like The Birth of a Nation to television characters in shows such as Sanford and Son and Good Times—have reinforced damaging narratives that continue to affect Black women today.
Co-facilitator Shauna L. Figueroa, a clinical social worker, shared her lived perspective:
“It just happens all the time. Let’s just think about Serena Williams. If she got mad for a bad call, she gets dehumanized and she’s called all types of names … but everybody could agree that John McEnroe does it 1,000 times and he’s got songs named after him.”
Why It Matters
This training is about more than addressing a stereotype—it’s about reclaiming narratives, amplifying voices, and ensuring equity in how Black women are seen and heard. By engaging participants in honest conversations, we’re able to provide tools for dismantling harmful assumptions and creating more inclusive communities.
