At Welcome 2 Reality, our mission has always been to empower communities with the tools to think critically about media and technology. We are proud to share that our advocacy—led by co-founder Qur-An Webb and our dedicated team—helped make possible a landmark change in Connecticut education.
On June 23, 2015, Governor Malloy signed Senate Public Act 15-94, a law requiring public schools across the state to teach safe social media use, media literacy, digital citizenship, and computer programming. The law went into effect in the 2016–2017 school year, ensuring that students now have the opportunity to build essential 21st-century skills.
As Qur-An Webb shared:
“We at Welcome 2 Reality are very proud of Bill 962 passing. As a company working in the areas of media literacy/social media we know the importance of this as we see the effects of poor choices in social media use among young people every day.”
Why It Matters
This law addresses a crucial need. While some schools had already taken steps to include media literacy, this legislation ensures all Connecticut schools will incorporate it. For students navigating today’s digital world—where misinformation, online risks, and social media pressures are a daily reality—this education is a powerful safeguard.
Mr. Webb added:
“Though some schools have already incorporated media literacy, knowing that all schools now should be doing this is very good news. It will be beneficial to all. We are genuinely proud and excited about the direction Connecticut is heading.”
Continuing the Work
This achievement is just one step in a larger journey. At Welcome 2 Reality, we remain committed to:
- Providing training and workshops for schools, parents, and organizations.
- Supporting towns and cities across Connecticut with implementation.
- Advocating nationally for stronger media literacy and digital citizenship education.
A Win for Students and Communities
This law is a victory for young people across Connecticut—and we’re honored to have played a role in making it happen. By equipping students with the tools to question, analyze, and engage responsibly with media, we are helping to shape a safer, smarter future.
